There is arguably no sound more influential to contemporary rap today than the Southern swing of Memphis, and no artist more symbolic of the scene than Lil Sko. Making a whole lot with very limiting equipment and little to non-existent music industry infrastructure, Sko worked with the now-critically venerated producers of the city, amassing a mixtape’s worth of classic Memphis trunk knockers over a five year period, titled U Know Tha Sko.
With the tape’s initial distribution in 1998 limited to private cassette copies and word of mouth marketing within Memphis, the project remained an underground blip in the mainstream history of rap. Fast forward to 2017, U Know Tha Sko was reissued via PLZ Make It Ruins, an act of acknowledgement to the artists who changed the face of rap forever.
